How to Play the Benoni Defense Zilbermints-Benoni Variation
- 1. d4 c5: White starts with the pawn on d4, a classical and strong center move, while Black responds with c5, immediately challenging White’s center and preparing the ground for the Benoni Defense. This move aims to disrupt White’s central pawn structure and contest control over the center right from the start.
- 2. b4: White offers a pawn with 2. b4, seeking a more dynamic game and control over the central squares. This move initiates the Zilbermints-Benoni Gambit, an unorthodox variation that aims to surprise Black and take them out of well-known lines of play. Variations of the Benoni Defense Zilbermints-Benoni Variation
Acceptance of the Gambit
Black can choose to accept the gambit by playing 2…cxb4, capturing the offered pawn. This leads to a more open position where White can seek compensation in development and piece activity in exchange for the sacrificed material.
Declination of the Gambit
An alternative for Black is to decline the gambit and continue with development, for example, with 2…d6, aiming to reinforce the center and prepare the advance e5. This option maintains a more solid pawn structure and avoids the tactical complications of accepting the gambit.
